Leading Seaman, Coast Guard, Grocer & Draper – 1871 census records him as a Coast Guard living at the ‘Warren’, Polperro. 14 years Churchwarden of this Parish.

Joseph Goodland had seen service in the Royal Navy rising to Bosuns Mate in 1862 aboard HMS Neptune before entering the Coastguard Service. He was eventually stationed at Polperro where he settled down marrying Elizabeth Resuggan in 1870. She was the daughter of Stephen Resuggan another Coastguard from Mevagissey stationed in Polperro. Joseph went on to open the Grocery & Drapery store on The Green, Polperro.
