    • “Sacred to the memory of Epenetus Head, aged 27, Master of the brig Three Friends, of London, those remains together with ship. Four of his crew are deposited under this spot. The brig being wrecked between Polperro and Looe in the night of the 22nd of November 1824 with all on board perished”

The Marine List – Lloyds List No 5963, dated 26 November 1824:

‘Polperro, near Looe, 23rd November 1824’

“The ‘Three Friends’ of London, laden with fruit, was wrecked this morning near this place, and all the crew drowned”

  • Also noted in Parish Records:
  • “Washed on shore form the “Three Friends” of London on the night of the 22nd inst. – Four men names unknown, 25 Nov 1824.”
  • “Washed on shore from on Talland Sands & supposed to be one of the crew of the above vessel – a man name unknown, 28 Nov 1824.

Thomas Grylls, a Cornish solicitor, helped devise the 1808 Gryll’s Act, stating that, all unclaimed drowned remains that were washed ashore, should be removed by the church wardens and buried in consecrated ground.
