Grade II Listed Headstone was re-sited after landslide in churchyard.

The headstone is primarily in memory of William and Reginold sons of Reginold (1729-1779) and Filley Barrett (Phillis née Rowett) (1729-) and originates to the time of their deaths in 1770. At the bottom of the stone is an inscription to Jane Jasper, added 95 years later.

Jane Jasper (née Barrett) married John Jasper (1785-1824), of Polperro, on 30th September 1805 at Lansallos Church, where a Richard Barrett was a witness.

With this small amount of information, the following could be suggested:

  • Guinnifer [Jennifer /Jane] Barrett was baptised on 12th August 1787 at Talland church – her parents are named as Richard Barrett (1754-1816) & Ann (née Philp) (1755-1793).
Richard b.1754 was the son of Reginold b.1729 and his second wife Mary (née Toms) (1726-1762) and half-brother to the two boys on this stone.

Both Jane’s husband and father’s names appear in a list of men from Polperro that had been captured in 1808 & 1812, during the Napoleonic Wars. (ref. PFHS/J16-‘A Stitch in Time’)
    John dies 1824 & Richard 1816
Jane (née Barrett) & John Jasper had several children; the first boy to be born after her father’s death was named Richard baptised at Talland, 26th March 1819.

Jane was widowed with at least 4 children under 9 years old.

C.1841 – As a widow with a young family, Jane works as a servant to a family with a baby, 6days old; West Looe.
C.1851 – Retired with two daughters & granddaughter, aged 2; Green, Polperro.
C.1861 – Now living with her daughter, Ann (b.1821) married to James Werry & baby, aged 1; Market Green, Polperro.

Maybe, Jane’s daughter Ann, was responsible for adding her mother’s inscription to the headstone belonging to Jane’s father’s baby half-brothers, 95 years after their deaths.
