Mrs Jerram made a huge impact on local life after moving to Talland Vicarage in 1891. She formed a Mothers’ Union and was absorbed in church duties, playing the organ and introducing bible classes.
As a way of giving thanks to the safe return of her four sons after the Great War, she erected the War Memorial, at Downend, Polperro. Located on the South West Coast Path.
“This cross is erected in memory of the fallen and as a thankoffering for the return of those who have been preserved on land and sea during The Great War 1914-1918”
Account of the Funeral of Maria Florence Jerram, née Knight, who died at Polperro Cornwall, 27th January, 1939, by kind permission of Frances Impey
FUNERAL ALONG CLIFF PATH UNIQUE FINAL TRIBUTES – By her wish the funeral on Tuesday was on foot, and, as the weather permitted, she was carried around to Talland by the cliff path. Twenty one fishermen in their blue jerseys formed relays of bearers. Although years ago this was the only possible way of reaching Talland for an internment, no one now living recalls a funeral going by the cliff path. Members of the Mothers’ Union waited at the Cross at Down End, where the hymn “Land Ahead” was sung. They also formed a lane at the entrance to the church and dropped snowdrops on the coffin after the internment. The service was conducted by the Re. H.A. Lewis, vicar of Penwerris and former vicar of Talland, and Miss W.; Bunt was the organist. The hymn “Fight the Good Fight” was sung, and the Mothers’ Union sang their hymn “Come Holy Spirit”. After the committal sentences, the Mothers’ Union sang the hymn they have used for closing their meetings, which was selected by Mrs. Jerram at the forming of the Branch.
