Ancestry research – show Herbert was an art student at the Royal Academy. He came to Polperro with his friend artist Charles Edward Boutwood. They each married local girls Sophia & Thurza Pond and then left Cornwall to live in Chicago, USA. Herbert & Sophia returned to England in 1894 and back to Polperro in 1898. 1911 census shows Herbert as an artist, born in London, living with his family, at The Orchard, Talland Hill, Polperro; they had six children. He opened a painting school in 1907 and exhibited 14 paintings at The Royal Academy, oil and later watercolour.

The Day’s Catch
Ancestry research – Probate records show three sums of money were bequeathed to Herbert: in Sept 1912, his father-in-law, John Pond, a widower, left all his personal effects, of £1,522. In Dec 1922-Clara Kate Gregory, a spinster living at Hillside, Polperro, a sum of about £1,820 and in June 1928-Hannah Hill Rowett, a spinster living at The Cottage, Polperro, an approximate sum of £2,300.
Probate records for Herbert show a net figure of £3,964 is bequeathed to his daughter Alice Butler and Charles B Spencer, his son-in-law, who was married to Nancy Butler.

Recently uncovered a plain slate memorial stone to three of his children, placed in front of the cross on the edge of the kerb stones.
