Capt. Romanis saw action in Lille, the Somme, Italy and Northern Russia. He also served in Dublin, India, China and Egypt – he received the Military Cross while serving for the Royal Garrison Artillery for distinguished service in connection with military operations in Italy.
He first saw action in and around Lille and was later at the battle of the Somme. In fact both he and his brother were at the Somme at the same time. Dr. W Hugo C. Romanis was in a field hospital and Capt. Donald Romanis was an Artillery officer in the area around Delville Wood. Surprisingly they did manage to meet up occasionally for ‘tea’.
