Thomas Braddon’s (1805-1873) family – [parents: William Bradddon 1776-1812 & Ann Forrest of Lansallos.]
Born in 1805, the year of his father’s bankruptcy, he married Ann Hocken (1805-1871), the daughter of local farmer John and Jane Hocken, on 20th November 1827 at Stoke Damerel, Devon. Thomas held various positions in the village during his lifetime: in 1827 he was a husbandman, in 1828 a shopkeeper, from 1831 to 1851 a publican on Lansallos Street, from 1852 to 1861 he was an auctioneer and on his death certificate he was described as ‘schoolmaster’.Thomas and Ann had seven children: John Hocken Braddon (1828-1830), James Harris Braddon (1831-1899), William Henry Braddon (1832-1898) who served in the Royal Navy and married Ann Elizabeth Rickard, also from Polperro, Thomas Braddon (1834-1903), Jane Emma Braddon (1836-1910), Ann Elizabeth Braddon (1838-1840) and John Hocken Braddon (1841-1897). Ann Braddon was buried at Talland, aged 65, on 15th October 1871, to be joined there by Thomas, who had died on 18th December 1873 of apoplexy, attended by his daughter, who was by then Jane Emma Oliver.
