DEATH: “At West Looe, on Sunday last, George, son of Lieut. Prynn R.N., aged 19.”
Royal Cornwall Gazette – pub. 16 October 1830
The spelling of all surnames on this remembrance stone include an additional ‘E’, which was not in use by any named, during their lifetime. Although not shown on the stone, records show, the two sons died in 1830, before their father, who died in 1838, which indicates the stone was erected some time later.
John Basset Prynn (1827-1875) was the youngest son of this large family and a much decorated officer. The London Gazette records his rise: in May 1846, J. B. Prynn was made a Second Lieutenant, aged 19 years, in 1851 as First Lieutenant he was still named ‘Prynn’ and then in April 1857, when he was promoted to Captain, his surname had changed to ‘Prynne’. So, just maybe this rounded topped stone, with tapered sides was positioned, amongst the older headstones, after 1852.
Lieutenant- Colonel Prynne in Her Majesty’s Corps of Royal Marines died suddenly on 29 November 1875 at Chatham Barracks, aged 48 years.
