– Ancestry Research – shows John Pond working as a coast guard, marrying Sophia Sarah Rowett, in Plymouth, in 1859. He qualifies to be a Master Mariner, and after many years as a merchant seaman, he eventually becomes master of a large steam yacht.
Crew List 1865 – 1st Mate: John Pond, aged 32, aboard the ’Andaman’ Iron ship with 955 Tonnage, built in Glasgow 1865, sailing from Glasgow to Bombay, “and from thence if required to any port or ports in The Indian or China Seas and/or Australasia, or any part of the Pacific Ocean, and/or the West coast or any other part of America, or the West Indies.. . until her return to a final port of discharge in the United Kingdom, going first if so required to any port or ports in Europe. Term of service not to exceed Three Years.”
