Grade II Listed Tombstone – paired with Headstone 283
20m & 22m to south west of tower of Church of St Tallanus
2 tombchest. Circa early C19. Rendered probably ashlar with plain base and moulded stone lid. Inscription eroded.
Inscription Reads:
Beneath this Marble
are deposited the Remains of Charles Kendall Esq.,
a Captain of the first rank
In the Royal Navy.
By his Death the Publick is deprived
of a Brave and Experienced Commander.
His acquaintance of a Sincere Friend,
the Indigent
of a munificent benefactor.
His pious care for the education
of the poor children of this Parish
will be a lasting testimony of his
Public Virtue.
He Died
the 19th day of Jan. 1746
In the 74th Year of his Age.

- 1709 – His cousin Mary Kendall bequeathed £100, for the teaching & instruction of poor girls in the Parish of Talland.
- 1741 – Flagon for wine at Holy Communion was presented by Captain Charles Kendall R.N, of Killigarth.
- 1742 – Church Warden of Talland Church
- 1746 – Charles Kendall bequeathed £200, for the teaching & instruction of poor boys in the Parish of Talland.
- Charles Kendal desired “that he be interned in the upper churchyard”, calling for “20 men to carry him, and paying them half a crown.” He asked for “a proper inscription to be laid over the grave”, and “all expensed should not exceed £100.”
- Richard Dodge (1653-1746), Vicar of Talland (1713-1746), was buried near by on 15th January, in woollen, but no headstone is visible today.
- His tomb-stone inscription was recorded by Thomas Bond in 1823: “Here lieth the body of the Rev. Mr. Richard Dodge, late of Talland, Vicar, who departed this life the 13th day of January 1746, in the 93rd year of his age.”
