Ledger Stone 15
~ Slate ~ ‘Memento Mori’ – ‘remember that you die’. As usual this exclamation is accompanied by motifs of death. The incised design encompasses a Nowy head – an hourglass, signifying the passage of time, an outstretched hand reaching to the winged angel in the heavens and the heart & arrow, an expression of wounded love. The script, using the Latin letter ƒ, is clear and undamaged.

memorial verse
From parish records, and marriage indexes: Reginold Barrett (1730-1779) was 49 years old when he died, his wife Mary (née Toms) (1726-1762) died earlier aged 36 years; they married in Lansallos on 23 June 1753. He was married to his second wife, Phillis [Philley] [Filley] Barrett, on the 16 April 1763 at Talland Church. The spelling of Reginold is varied: [Reginald] [Regnold] [Rigenold] [Riginold]. His Will tells us he was a Mariner of Talland parish.
This memorial can be connected to other children’s burials inside and outside Talland Church. Wife Mary (née Toms) (1726-1762) is recorded here with their son Reginold Barrett (1756-1761). A further five children of Reginold & Phillis (née Rowet) are remembered; on this stone is Filley Barrett (1765-1765) and Reginold Barrett (1766-1769) together with William Barrett (1769-1770) on Headstone 89 in the east graveyard. A further two young children are remembered on Ledger Stone 41, Filley Barret (1771-1776) and Thomas Barrett (1774-1775).
