Manuscript Leaf

Memorial 61

~ Illuminated writing displayed in doubled-sided hinged frame, attached to Reredos panelling.

~ Orientation ~ East Wall ~ 52 x 39 cm // 1’7″ x 1’2″ (document approx)

  • Late Medieval Manuscript – possibly 15th-16th century with Latin script.
  • The illuminated writing is a leaf taken from a Psalter Book, and shows the end of Psalm 24 and 8 verses of Psalm 25.
  • A decorated versal is a letter that starts a verse.
  • It took several scribes to produce text, as each finished their work they would sign off in the margins. Even today, a signed document is seen as proof of identity.

“The original complete psalter book would probably have once stood on a tall lectern, at head height, around which the priests/clerks would have grouped to sing the psalms. They all sang from the same book which is why the writing is so large.”
