Illegible Verse
William Barrett died on 5th February 1836 and was buried on 8th February 1836 at Lansallos Church. William was baptized at Talland Church on 8th March 1772, son of Richard and Jane (Burn). William was a Fish Merchant.
William’s older brother Richard (1766 to 1832) is buried at Lansallos (see gravestone 99) and his younger brother Matthew (1774 to 1796) is remembered on the same gravestone as William.
It is presumed that this is the William Barrett who was a crew member of the smuggling vessel the Lottery, along with his brother Richard, and their first cousin Roger Toms (son of their Aunt Elizabeth (nee Barrett) and John Toms). William along with 4 other crew members was found guilty at the Old Bailey on 30th October 1799 of obstructing officers in the service of the Customs when they boarded and seized the Lottery on 14th May 1799. All 5 were found guilty and sentenced to 2 years hard labour on a prison hulk on the River Thames at Woolwich. This would explain why, despite being married in 1799, William’s first child was baptised (and presumably born) in December 1802.
William married Elizabeth Libby on 1st May 1799 at Talland Church. His occupation was listed as fisherman.
Elizabeth died on 28th September 1852 and was buried on 2nd October 1852 at Lansallos Church. Elizabeth was baptized on 26th December 1773 at Talland Church, daughter of Henry Libby and Elizabeth Jasper..
William and Elizabeth had 5 children (all baptized at Talland Church):
Elizabeth (bap. 25th December 1802) married George Heard on 25 September 1824 in Stoke Damerel, Devon.
Jane (bap. 3rd March 1805) married Thomas Coad. Jane was buried at Lansallos on 19th April 1854 aged 49.
Susanna (bap. 13th March 1808), married John Neave, a Coastguard born at Worstead in Norfolk in 1817, at East Stonehouse, Devon on 3 May 1843. Witnesses to the Marriage were Wm Barrett, R Barrett (presumably her 2 brothers). They returned to live in Polperro, where John served as a Coastguard, and five children were born in Polperro between 1844 and 1853. Susanna died at Polperro on 11 July 1891 and was buried at Lansallos on 16 July 1891.
William (bap. 7th March 1813) became a Linen Draper at Liskeard and married Jane Langford at Liskeard on 31 may 1836 and after her death married her sister Eliza Langford at Plymouth on 19 December 1848. William remained in business at Liskeard as a Draper at Market Street Liskeard until at least 1891 before moving to Saltash where he died on 5 March 1904 at the age of 90.
Richard (bap. 26th July 1818) married Ann Rean Fowler on 25th October 1838 at Talland church. After Ann’s death Richard married Jane Broad Congdon on 15th August 1853 and lived at Landividdy until his death in 1913, aged 95.
